In honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month we are talking about ways to prevent skin cancer and are announcing another fantastic Image Skin Care product info night!
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., with its annual diagnosis totals higher than that of all other cancers combined. The good news is that you can do a lot to protect yourself!
How can we protect our skin to prevent skin cancer?
#1 – ALWAYS Use Sunscreen!
Sunscreen is KEY in preventing skin cancer. A broad-spectrum sunscreen should be used of no less than SPF 15. Apply 30 minutes before going outside to allow it to properly absorb into your skin. Be sure to reapply every two hours or after heavy sweating or getting wet. It is ideal to apply sunscreen all year round to ensure that your skin is protected.
#2 – Seek Shade!
Try your best to avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sun is the strongest throughout these hours, allowing it to harm your skin more easily.
#3 – DO NOT Burn!
Many people allow their skin to burn in the hopes it will later transition to tan. Allowing yourself to burn, even slightly, is very dangerous to your skin! Don’t do it!
#4 – DO NOT Use Tanning Beds!
This one is pretty self-explanatory! It is common knowledge that using a tanning booth or bed will likely cause cancer! Opt for a spray tan instead!
#5 – Cover Up!
Try to cover your body with clothing as often as possible and be sure to have a floppy broad-brimmed hat on hand as well as UV-blocking sunglasses! We could use an excuse to go shopping…
#6 – Check Yourself!
Regularly check your skin and report any changes to your doctor. Even if it seems small and insignificant, your doctor is there to help and will be pleased that you are taking initiative.
